If you are thinking of buying a pressure washer or pressure washer but you don't know which option to choose, we have some advice and recommendations to give you so that you can select the option that best suits your needs.
Pressure washers, as their name suggests, are machines that clean by emitting high-pressure water. They are ideal for removing embedded dirt on floors and walls.
In general, they are used outdoors, although they could also be used on tiled surfaces, such as a bathroom. In addition to cleaning walls and floors, we can also use them to wash the car, motorcycle or bicycles (they are widely used by MTB cyclists), clean garden furniture or garbage cans and in some cases they can even help us unclog pipes
As we have already pointed out, this type of cleaner, with few exceptions, is indicated for use outdoors. Putting them to good use, they allow us to save up to 8 times the amount of water that we would use in the same job using a normal hose.
In addition, it allows us to clean without the use of detergents (although several models come with a special detergent tank). Here are some key points to look for when selecting a pressure washer:
Power . As expected, the more seized and difficult to remove the dirt to be removed, the more powerful the machine must be to remove the water with more pressure. The manufacturers offer us the parameters in which each model moves. We must assess both flow per hour and maximum flow per minute. The first would be like the general work capacity and the second the maximum peak, like a kind of "turbo" to activate at specific and necessary moments. Power is measured in bars (one bar equals one kilo of pressure per cm2).
Type of motor . Among the types of motor we have electric with cable, gasoline or battery. The gasoline ones in general are more powerful than the electric ones and do not have any autonomy problem as long as we have gasoline on hand. For this reason they are more recommended for those who need professional use. For the home we can choose between a battery-powered one, more comfortable as it does not have cables but with limited autonomy, or one with a cable, which will be cheaper by saving the battery but which we cannot use if we do not have a nearby light point.
Use of detergent . Some models come with a detergent tank that we can fill for certain uses. We must assess whether we are going to use it or not depending on what type of use we are going to give it. In any case, it is an extra that does not make the machine much more expensive, so if we are not sure if we are going to use it, it is better to include it.
extras . Pressure washers or pressure cleaning machines must come with several extras apart from the pressure gun, which is the minimum that all of them come with. It is very interesting to have several nozzles that we will place according to our needs, as well as a long enough hose (there are models that come with up to 12 meters in length). If the hose is long, it is better to include a hose reel. That it has quality wheels to move easily or a water filter to prevent impurities from entering the machine are other pluses.
How to choose pressure washers according to your water flow
The concept of water flow is not well known, so if you do not want to make a mistake when selecting a pressure washer, this can follow your guide. Normally, at a higher level of use, a higher pressure will be necessary. This pressure is measured in bars (one bar is equivalent to one kilo of pressure per cm2).
Depending on the use that we are going to give it depending on surfaces and intensity, we can make the following pressure recommendation:
- For occasional use, such as cleaning bicycles or garden furniture, between 100 and 110 bars would be sufficient.
- For moderate use in cleaning cars, walls and exterior floors up to 30 m2, we would go to the next level of between 110 and 120 bars.
- Those who are going to use it frequently, cleaning facades, swimming pools and outdoor floors of up to 40 m2, a pressure between 120 and 140 bars is recommended.
- For professional and more intensive use in cleaning facades, swimming pools, roofs and outdoor floors up to 60 m2, we have pressure washer options with up to 180 bars.
Hot and cold water pressure washers
We must know that although high-pressure machines usually work with cold water, the high-end ones allow hot water to enter at temperatures of up to 40ºC or even 60ºC in some cases. This is an advantage because, as we all know, the degreasing power of hot water is much better than that of cold water. But we must be careful since the manufacturers warn that it is not convenient to abuse very hot water as it generates greater wear on some of its parts. Using a specific detergent, even with cold water, can also be a good option.
In these pressure washers that admit hot water, we must bear even more in mind the recommendations for use of the pressure washers. Basically they tell us that we must empty both the machine and the hose of water, occasionally grease the rubbers of the connectors to prevent them from cracking with a small amount of grease. Also, from time to time, we must clean the lime that can get stuck in the mouthpiece.
